 ASUU calls of long strike..student rush back to school and academic session resumes..

The numerous campuses of the nation’s campuses got  alive yesterday, as lecturers resumed work after 58 calendar days of strike embarked upon to force home their requests. A huge number of university students stormed their numerous campuses yesterday and in some cases were met by their lecturers, whilst proper class function would likely begin today or Monday.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) National Executive Council (NEC) on Wednesday in Abuja, cancelled the 58-day strike after numerous sessions with agents of the Federal Government|, to make certain the achievement of the problems in contention

When Daily Sun went to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), lecturers were observed in their offices tending to a number of students, mostly final year students writing their project.
The Chairman of LASU ASUU, Dr. Jamiu Oluwatoki, informed Daily Sun that his members have resumed work in line with NEC decision and that as soon as the Senate modifies the academic calendar and the students get back from the holiday, lecture will begin.

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) ASUU Chairman, Dr. Ife Adewunmi, stated, with the suspension of the strike, his members will evaluate exam taken by students before the strike took off, whilst noting that further activities, like departmental functions and others will pick up next week stressing. His UNILAG counterpart, Dr. Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, informed our correspondent on telephone that his members have been notified of NEC resolution through Text and that a congress meeting will hold today.

Dr. Ogbinaka stated, he is expecting the Senate of UNILAG to review the academic calendar, after the system lost 42 working days and insisted that the union came out much better in the fight. University of Ibadan (UI) ASUU Chairman, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, informed our correspondent on phone that, even though, the institution is on break, however its members was prepared to continue work, stressing, “the strike is a huge lesson to the Federal Government and the outcome will better the universities because the significance of the battles was to improve the system.”

National Universities Commission (NUC) is {ready to|prepared to} accredit the programmes of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) which is yet to graduate any pupil since its resuscitation in 2001, Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Julius Okojie, hinted yesterday.

He was responding to questions from journalists in Abuja at the starting ceremony of a three day workshop for tutors as well as facilitators in open and distance learning in the Nigerian university system.

“The open university has not graduated students now. We have advised them to reduce the number of programmes and centers and input. The NOUN has always been there and has the same programmes like other universities. It is not that NOUN has not been good but we are telling them to focus. We are just about to go there for accreditation”

He stated NOUN which is the flagship of open and distant learning in the country would certainly play a vital part in increasing human capital production by means of provision of excellent education.
